MESSAGE TO TOMBRAIDERGIRL: The version was the original game. I am not sure if there was another version. Please allow me to edit the secrets section since it is locked at the moment. I have chronicles secrets and images to add. Also let me edit the Iris and Sun Goddess please. The images are excellent! If you could do me an image of:

*Pyramid key - End of Natla's mines
*The 4 objects found at the obelisk of khamoon
*and any other sub artefacts

I would be more than happy to construct an article for each object to be put in the artefacts section. Leave your message here. Thanks. XIII
It's not Turkey
I was one of the first people to purchase the Tomb Raider game when it was first released for PS1 back when it is still in its hey day on the PC as well. And it has been stated several times that the second level is Greco-Roman and takes part in a European country. Turkey is contrary to popular belief NOT part of Europe, only western Turkey manages to sneak in. But it is quite clear that the level is designed to emulate a Greco-Roman atmosphere. There is no clear indiciation that this level was based on Turkey other than the fact of Phrygia and Midas. However, if The Colosseum level in Chronicles is supposedly meant to be the same Colosseum in TR1 then it would clearly indicate that the lvel is in Rome. Otheriwise why is there a paralell with DuPont? Piecraft 10:33, 19 June 2006 (CEST)

Palace Midas is the seventh level of the original Tomb Raider.

Part of an ancient series of puzzles designed to protect the piece of the Scion buried with Tihocan. The Palace Midas requires Lara to collect three Lead Bars, each hidden within a cunning death trap. Once these bars are collected the statue of Midas can be used to turn the bars into gold. These three gold bars allow access to the Cistern.

Notes
Midas - was a character in Greek mythology, who is mostly recognized for his ability to turn anything he touched into gold.
He was king of Pessinus, a city in Phrygia in Asia Minor, who as a child was adopted by Gordias and Cybele. He was known for being a hedonist, and an excellent rose gardener, and according to the myth, he had one son, Lityerses; but in some variations of the myth he had a daughter, Zoe, instead of a son.
|}St. Francis' Folly is the fifth level of Tomb Raider 1. After finishing her task in Peru Lara comes here to search for the next part of the scion.

You will meet lions, gorillas, Pierre DuPont and bats.

It's your task to collect the four keys of Atlas, Neptune, Thor and Damocles and open the door with them, to get into the colosseum.

Objectives
* Access the second part of the monastery
* Collect the Thor, Damocles, Atlas and Neptune keys
* Unlock the 4 barrier door leading to Colosseum

Notes
* Thor - is the red-haired and bearded nature god of thunder in Norse mythology and more generally Germanic mythology. He is the son of Odin and Jord. He carried a hammer as a weapon, and it is said when the hammer struck, lightening was produced.

* Atlas - in Greek mythology was one of the primordial Titans. Atlas was the son of the Titan Iapetos and the Oceanid Klymene.

* Neptune - was the god of the sea, as well as horses and, as "Earth-Shaker", of earthquakes in Roman mythology. He carried a trident as a weapon.

* Damocles - was an excessively flattering courtier in the court of Dionysius I of Syracuse, a 4th Century BC tyrant of Syracuse, Italy. He exclaimed that, as a great man of power and authority, Dionysius was truly fortunate. Dionysius offered to switch places with him for a day, so he could taste first hand that fortune. In the evening a banquet was held, where Damocles very much enjoyed being waited upon like a king. Only at the end of the meal did he look up and notice a sharpened sword hanging by a single piece of horsehair directly above his head. Immediately, he lost all taste for the fine foods and beautiful boys and asked leave of the tyrant, saying he no longer wanted to be so fortunate.
Tomb Raider was the first of the series, the seed of a legacy. It impressed players at the time, with it's 3D graphics, and new player interaction, as well as the third-person perspective that all the games have adopted. This game introduces us to the protagonist of Tomb Raider itself: Lara Croft. An expansion came out in 1998 with a seperate 4-level adventure attached. This expansion was known as Tomb Raider Unfinished Business. A PDA version was also released later on. It was released on Nokia N-Gage in 2003.

Synopsis
Adventurer Lara Croft has been hired to recover the pieces of an ancient artefact known as the Scion. With her fearless acrobatic style, she runs, jumps, swims and climbs her way toward the truth of its origins and powers - leaving only a trail of empty tombs and gun-cartridges in her wake.
Gameplay
Tomb Raider is third perspective with the camera following Lara. She can run, walk, vault, shimmy, jump, move blocks, swim, swan dive, roll, shoot and perform numerous acrobatic aerial manoeuvres. She automatically locks on to enemies and can run and jump while locked on, giving her the advantage to jump behind the enemy while shooting it in the back. The AI of enemies is mediocre. When confronted with a lion, the lion will run but stop to growl and then run again, and then stopping to growl and so forth. This can be seen as unrealistic, but the overall AI is okay.

When Lara is jumping to another platform, she must produce a well timed jump for longer distances, with simple stationary jumps for shorter distances. Some platforms may require Lara to produce a running jump which causes her to grab the edge of the platform, she must then vault up. To get to another platform, Lara must grab onto the edge of the platform she is standing on, and shimmy across a group of edges before she can vault up. If Lara drops down from a great height she will die. Some heights will only deal damage but not kill her, the damage depends on the altitude. She can also be killed by the actions of enemies and by numerous traps throughout the game.

There are some puzzles in the game but they are more practical than mathematical. For example, some doors may be timed and Lara must use a lever to open it then cross a series of obstacles, usually requiring timed jumps. Some puzzles require the finding of items and keys. The Palace Midas level requires the player to find a magical process in order to complete the level.

In the PlayStation and Sega Saturn versions of Tomb Raider, saving the game is restricted to fixed save points within each level, marked by a floating blue crystal. When Lara touches one of these the option to save is made available. The scarcity of these points, however, means that if the player dies, large portions of each level must be replayed, much to the players' frustration. Following criticism on this system, Core implemented a save anywhere at anytime feature in Tomb Raider II, which, in turn, lead to complaints that the game was made too easy. A compromise was reached with Tomb Raider III under the form of "collectible save crystals." The PC and Mac versions of the game allow the player to save at any time.

Development
Preliminary work on Tomb Raider commenced in 1993, but it was not until November 1996 that the game actually saw the light of day as a retail product. The title was crafted by Core Design of Europe, who took 18 months to develop it. The team consisted of six people, among them Toby Gard, who is credited with the invention of Lara Croft. The character went through several changes before Core settled on the version she became famous for. In its earliest conception, Lara Croft was a male placeholder for an as yet undefined character, but as Core decided that puzzles and stealth should be more important to the game than action, they found that these requirements better suited a female character than a classic male action hero.

As such Lara was born under the name Laura Cruz. "Laura" was later dropped in favor of Lara, to appeal more to American audiences. At the same time, her backstory started to shape up and it was decided she should become more British, hence Cruz was changed to Croft to accommodate this. Personality-wise, Lara was a cold-blooded militaristic type in the early concepts. According to Toby Gard, the idea to make her a female Indiana Jones was not present from the beginning, but rather grew naturally out of the development process as the game took its final form.

Lara's famous breast size was in actuality brought about by accident. Toby Gard was fudging around with the model when he accidentally blew up Lara's bosom to 150% of what he intended it to be. As he was resizing it back to normal, the other designers saw what he was working on and told him they loved it and that he should keep the double size.

Interestingly enough, it is Core's contention that the company was struggling somewhat with 32-bit development at that time. It is also rumoured that Tomb Raider's publishing company Eidos was near bankruptcy when Tomb Raider was created. The first glints of the game were seen on Sega Saturn development kits. However, ultimately, it would be the PlayStation rendition that would be known best.

Game Elements
Characters
Larson - A dimwitted henchman of Natla. He originally made contact with Lara in Calcutta on behalf of Natla. In Peru, he tried to kill Lara but failed. He ultimately met his demise in Egypt. He uses a Revolver.

Pierre Du Pont - Another henchman of Natla. He was sent to find the second Scion piece in Rome before Lara. He usually would play cat and mouse throughout the Midas and Tihocan complex. He was killed by Lara. He uses Magnums.

from Tomb Raider
She is the daughter of Lord Henshingly Croft and was raised to be an aristocrat from birth. After attending finishing school at the age of 21, Lara's marriage into wealth has seem assured, but on her way home from a skiing trip her chartered plane had crashed deep in the heart of the Himalayas. The only survivor, Lara learned how to depend on her wits to stay alive in hostile conditions a world away from her sheltered upbringing. 2 weeks later, when she walked into the village of Tokakeriby her experience had had a profound effect on her. Unable to stand the claustrophobic suffocating atmosphere of upper-class British society, she realised that she was only truly alive when she was travelling alone. Over the 8 following years she acquired an intimate knowledge of ancient civilisations across the globe. Her family disowned their prodigal daughter, and she turned to writing to fund her trips. Famed for discovering several ancient sites of profound archaeological interest she made a name for herself by publishing travel books and detailed journals of her exploits.

from The Last Revelation
The daughter of Lord Henshingly Croft, Lara was brought up in the secure world of aristocracy - wanting for nothing she was surrounded by servants, social events and high society.

Having attended Wimbledon High School for Girls from the age of 11 years, Lara's parents decided that now she was 16, she should broaden her education by studying for her A'levels at one of England's most prominent boarding schools. An adventurous soul, Lara found the idea of being sent away from home an exciting prospect. By chance one day Lara came across a copy of National Geographic on the hall table. The front cover featured a familiar name - Professor Werner Von Croy. A respected archaeologist, Von Croy had once lectured at Lara's school to pupils and parents alike. The experience had a profound effect on Lara, triggering a desire to travel to remote locations in search of adventure. In some ways Von Croy had become an inspirational figure for Lara.

As Lara read further, she learned that Von Croy was currrently preparing for an archaeological tour across Asia, culminating in a potential new discovery to be made in Cambodia. Unable to contain herself, Lara burst into the room, thrust the article in front of her parents and without hesitation demanded she accompany Von Croy on his expedition. Lord Croft could hardly disagree that travel was an education in itself. As Lara argued the case further, he found himself walking over to the desk and penning a letter to Von Croy, introducing himself as an influential society figure and offering financial assistance in exchange for his daughter's place on the expedition.

Von Croy's reply assured the Henshingly Crofts that the territories were friendly and that he had ample experience to look after both his and Lara's well being. Lara's company as an assistant would be welcome, as was the offer of such a generous cheque. He remembered Lara from his lecture - her incessant yet insightful questions had made quite an impression upon him.

And so it was agreed by all that Lara would accompany Von Croy for the duration of the tour...

from Tomb Raider Legend (official site)
At the age of nine, Lara survived a plane crash in the Himalayan mountains that resulted in the death of her mother. After miraculously surviving a ten-day solo trek from the crash site to Katmandu, she spent the rest of her childhood under the close tutage of her Archeologist father - the late Earl of Abbingdon, Richard Croft.

At the age of eighteen, after the death of her father, Lara inherited the Croft estates and became Countess of Abbingdon. Since then she has been credited with the discovery of some sixteen archeoligical sites of international significance.

She has been hailed both as an Archeological Wunderkind and a glorified Treasure Hunter, depending on whom you listen to. There are thousands of rumors surrounding Lady Croft's exploits, invariably involving the unexplained or outright unbelievable. Lady Croft herself is, unfortunately, never available for comment, which further adds to the veil of mystery that surrounds her life and work.

Consequently, Lady Croft continues to be the focus of wild speculations and intense debate. Idealized and villified in equal measure, she is perhaps one of the most fascinating and enigmatic figures of our times.
Tomb Raider Chronicles is the fifth in the Tomb Raider game series, and the last of the Tomb Raider Classic. The game consists of 4 short adventures and has no expansions. A level editor program however accompanies the game.

Synopsis
It is a cold dark rainy day, the memorial service for Lara Croft over, Charles Kane, Winston and Father Dunstan retire to Croft Mansion. As thay collect their thoughts, they reminisce about Lara's past adventures...

Meanwhile hundreds of miles away Werner Von Croy co-ordinates the frantic dig searching for answers buried deep beneath the Egyptian desert...
Release Dates in Detail
Coming Soon

Gameplay
The game uses the same engine that created The Last Revelation. Lara can perform all the moves from the previous games but Chronicles boasts no new moves. The only weapon to be added to Lara's arsenal is the grappling gun which is only used twice in the game. Graphics are slightly improved, with better reflections off Lara's catsuit, a new outfit which Lara wears later in the game.

The only unique essence about Chronicles is the story telling mode which it adopts, the short but snappy stories do not intertwine with each other. Larson and Pierre Du Pont make a second appearence giving us some chronological order to the adventures that take place. Along with Chronicles, comes the Level Editor, a chance for players to edit rooms and create their own obstacles, then test them using Lara.

Again Croft Mansion does not appear in the game. Instead, a short obstacle and training course disguised as a backstage area of an opera house makes an appearence at the beginning of the level: Streets of Rome.

Although the game does not specify the location of the last adventure, it clearly indicates that VCI is located in New York City since the World Trade Center can be seen in the background scenery, looking out through windows.
Tomb Raider The Last Revelation is the fourth game of the Tomb Raider games series. The entire game takes place in Egypt and is the lengthiest game of the series. As well as a new engine, the game boasts more intricate levels. An expansion level for PC only was created afterwards in conjunction with The Times newspaper. No other expansion was created like the previous three games.

Synopsis
I Semerkhet, High Priest of Horus, forewarn that he who removes the Amulet shall have released Set. He who walked abroad with the Jackals at the dawn of man shall once again violate the Earth.

Set, ruler of evil, will again be free at the turn of a distant millennia. At his heel plagues and locusts. Harvests fail under the broken skies.

And Set sayeth:
"I am the shadows across the sun: I am the bringer of plagues. My wrath will consume all lands, and shall be ceaseless."

* Japan - 19th July 2000

Gameplay
The game uses a new engine. The title screen is different since the player will fly through first person perspective across many scenes related to Egypt, while selecting from the game menu. This is different compared to the traditional ring and passport system adopted by the first three games. The inventory is also displayed differently. Instead of the ring system, is uses a conveyor belt style approach which runs across the top of the screen.

Lara is contructed from more polygons and her mouth actually moves when she speaks, this makes a great change to the sporadic knodding the she would adopt when speaking in the previous games. This also applies to all other characters. As well as being able to perform all the moves in the previous games, she can now rope swing and shimmy around corners. She will continuously push/pull boxes without having to start and stop over again (a very annoying aspect of the previous games). She can also now pull levers with a oscillating motion. Although Lara can move more fluidly, the camera positions have found been found to pose some difficulties.

Weapons have changed also. With the introduction of new weapons, comes different types of ammunition. This applies to the shotgun, crossbow and grenade launcher. Different types of ammo have different capabilities, e.g. the poison and explosive crossbow ammunition. Also the laser sight makes its first appearence in this game. It is found seperately and can be attached to the revolver and crossbow for more accurate shooting that takes place in the first person perspective.

When shooting, empty bullets can be seen being emptied from the weapon. Enhanced smoke effects are also used when a weapon is shot. When Lara climbs out of water, droplets of water can be seen dripping from all over her body. Sun reflection have been enhanced and also general weathering.

The game has new vehicles and Lara keeps her classic tomb raider outfit on throughout the game. Last revelation is a ressurection of the original Tomb Raider. As well as the outfit, the mass features of tombs and quiet locations backs up this ressurection. Croft Mansion does not appear in this game. The first level serves as a training course as Von Croy will guide Lara with tips.

Game Elements
Characters
* Werner Von Croy - The main villain of the game. Once Lara's mentor, he now seeks revenge for Lara leaving him trapped in Cambodia. He becomes possessed by Set.

* Jean Yves - A friend of Lara's. He helps her along the game with information. He is kidnapped by Von Croy but later is rescued by Lara.

* Guide - Lara's guide, he was secretly working for Von Croy. He accompanies Lara through the Tomb of Seth but runs off after translating some script above a doorway.

Weapons

Game Elements
Characters
* Winston - The butler returns as a storyteller. He tells the tale of the reclaimation of the Iris and the story of the Philosopher's Stone.

* Charles Kane - A storyteller and close friend of Lara. He tells the story about the Spear of Destiny.

* Father Dunstan - A storyteller and close friend of Lara. He tells the story about Lara's and his experiences with demons in Ireland.

* Larson - He makes his second appearence in Rome. Working with Pierre, he tries to obtain the Philosopher's Stone but fails.

* Pierre Du Pont - He makes his second appearence in Rome. Working with Larson, he tries to obtain the Philosopher's Stone but fails.

* Admiral Yarofev - He commandeers the submarine looking for the Spear of Destiny. His resources and power had been bought by the mafia. He had no interest in the artefact.

* Zip - Making his debue, he aids Lara in stealing the Iris. He communicates with her via a headset and has an extensive knowledge of security systems.

Enemies
* Dog
* Larson
* Stone Serpents
* Centurian Head
* Swarm of Rats
* Swarm of Bats
* Gladiator
* VCI Suit Guard
* Android

Weapons
- Pistols (with unlimited ammunition)
- Shotgun
- Uzis
- HK Gun
- Desert Eagle
- Revolver
- Grappling Gun
Notes
Although the game does not specify the location of the last adventure, it clearly indicates that VCI is located in New York City since the World Trade Center can be seen in the background scenery, looking out through windows.

Piecraft: Controversy over death and events of TR1/Chronicles

How could Pierre be in two games and which one was first?

In Chronicles it was said, that the quest for the Philosopher's Stone was one of Lara's first adventures.

And at the beginning of Tomb Raider 1 it seemed as if Lara had done this kind of job often before.

So I assumed Chronicles was first. In both games it seemed as if Pierre got killed.

- Shot by Lara in the Tomb of Tihocan in Tomb Raider 1.

- Falling down into the depth in the Colosseum in Chronicles.

Pierre's Death
I think that Pierre appeared in Tomb Raider I before Chronicles as it is more likely that he would surviver bullet wounds than a huge fall into a pit!

Controversy over death and events of TR1/Chronicles
This is how I see it:

In Tomb Raider, Larson uses a handgun with a lasersight attached (a much more modern weapon). In Chronicles, he uses a Revolver.
We also know that Larson works with Pierre DuPont.

It is assumed in ONE of the games that Pierre has been killed off, just as Larson managed to dodge a bullet in TR1.

Pierre is
- Shot by Lara in the Tomb of Tihocan in Tomb Raider 1, but we clearly SEE his body lying dead so there is no exception here, the man is dead unless by some magical feat of supernatural interference he is ressurected from the dead which is unlikely in this case (but still a possibility).

- Falling down into the depth in the Colosseum in Chronicles. We know from previous experience of TR games that characters that fall down pits i.e. TR4 end up surviving, so it is logical to believe that the reason Pierre seems to be able to track and hide across the entire European Level of TR1 so well is because he knows the area pretty well i.e. he knows the nooks can crannies of the place inside and out and is able to oddly disappear out of thin air in TR1 when you give chase.

Therefore it is my belief by rational consideration that Chronicles occurs prior to TR1 due to the manner in which Lara also communicates with Larson/Pierre in the first game (TR1), it would appear as though she "may" have had an encounter with them and seems familiar with Larson's double-crossing as well as Pierre's manner, and it would justify why Pierre survives in the Colosseum and being able to understand his whereabouts well enough to have discovered the Tomb of Tihocan, only he was unaware of the scion at this time (Chronicles), and would later re-enter the Colosseum when requested by Ms. Natla to uncover the scion.
This is my understanding of the entire events. It's doubtful that Larson would manage to survive gunshot wounds twice in a row after re-appearing in Egypt later. Of course it is also plausible that the two faked their own deaths, but this did not appear to be the case in TR1 as we could clearly see their dead bodies lying on the floor after Lara had shot them down for the second time in Larson's case, and the final time in DuPont's.
